1. Who we are

The Critique and Site Critique are products made by Brutally Human Studio. Brutally Human Studio is the trade name of Brutally Human LLC, a limited liability company registered in the State of New York. In these terms, "we," "us" and "our" mean Brutally Human LLC, and "you" means anyone who visits or uses our websites or services.

These terms cover The Critique (thecritique.design), Site Critique (sitecritique.app), and every page, tool, program, email and report connected to them. We call all of that "the Services."

2. Accepting these terms

By using the Services, you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you don't agree, please don't use the Services. If you use them on behalf of a studio, agency or other organization, you confirm that you have the authority to accept these terms for it.

3. What the Services are

The Critique is a community of designers and the people who hire them. It includes:

  • Site Critique, a free tool that reads a website and produces a report on how it is likely to be perceived by clients, recruiters and hiring managers.
  • Critics 2027, a volunteer panel of experienced professionals who review portfolios against The Critique Standard.
  • The Critique's Choice, a recognition program for sites that meet that standard.
  • Resources, a curated collection of reading from other publishers.
  • Our newsletter, which you can join and leave at any time.

We may add, change or remove features as the Services grow. We will try to tell you about changes that matter, but we can't promise that every feature will always be available.

4. Who can use the Services

You must be at least 18 years old to use the Services. By using them, you confirm that you are.

5. Using Site Critique

Site Critique is free to use, and you don't need an account. When you submit a website address, you confirm that the site is yours or that you have permission to have it reviewed.

We read only what is publicly visible on the pages you submit. We don't log in to anything, get around paywalls, or access private areas of a site.

To keep the Services running smoothly for everyone, results for the same site may be cached for up to 24 hours. We may limit how often a site can be audited, or how many audits one person can run, to prevent abuse.

6. Acceptable use

We want The Critique to be a place where people can be honest and generous with each other. When you use the Services, please don't:

  • submit sites, content or information you don't have the right to share;
  • use the Services to harass, mislead or harm anyone;
  • try to manipulate a score or recognition, including by placing hidden text or instructions on a site to influence an audit;
  • scrape, copy or resell the Services, reports or other people's information;
  • interfere with the security or operation of the Services, or try to access systems you aren't authorized to use; or
  • break any law that applies to you.

We may refuse, suspend or remove access, audits, applications or recognitions that break these rules.

7. Critics 2027

Critics are volunteers. Applying doesn't guarantee a place, and every application is reviewed by a person. Being a critic is unpaid and doesn't create an employment, agency or partnership relationship with us.

If you're accepted, you agree to review work honestly, respectfully and against The Critique Standard, and to keep private anything you see that isn't already public. You give us permission to publish the profile details you approved when you applied. You can ask to step down, and to have your public profile removed, at any time.

8. The Critique's Choice

A high audit score can make a site eligible for The Critique's Choice, but it never guarantees recognition. Every recognition is reviewed by a person, and the decision is ours. We only publish a site, its image and its recognition with its creator's permission, and each recognition carries the date it was awarded. Because sites change after recognition, we may update, archive or remove a recognition if a site no longer reflects what was recognized.

Recognized creators may display the badge and award graphics we provide, without changing them, on the site that was recognized and in their own promotion of that recognition.

9. Your content

You keep ownership of your website and everything on it. By submitting a site, you give us a limited permission to access its public pages, analyze them, and produce and store a report for you. If you apply to be a critic or accept a recognition, you also give us permission to display the details and images you've approved, for as long as they are part of the Services.

We may use audit results in anonymous, combined form, for example to calculate the average score shown on our site or to improve how audits work. We won't publish your individual report without your permission.

10. Our content

The Critique and Site Critique names, logos, seal, award designs, The Critique Standard, our reports, our design and our written content belong to Brutally Human LLC. You may use your own audit report however you like, including sharing it. Otherwise, please don't copy, adapt or redistribute our content or branding without written permission.

The articles in Resources belong to their publishers. We link to them; we don't own or control them.

11. About AI-generated reports

Site Critique uses automated analysis, including artificial intelligence, to read sites and write reports. Reports are an informed perspective on how a site may be perceived, not a statement of fact about you or your work. They can be wrong, especially when a site depends on reputation, relationships or content we can't see. Please use your own judgment before acting on any recommendation.

Scores and reports don't measure your talent or your worth, and they don't guarantee any job, client, income or outcome.

12. Disclaimers

The Services are provided "as is" and "as available." To the fullest extent the law allows, we make no warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including warranties of accuracy, fitness for a particular purpose, or uninterrupted availability.

13. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, Brutally Human LLC will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for any lost profits, opportunities or data, arising from your use of the Services. Because Site Critique is free, our total liability to you for any claim related to the Services will not exceed one hundred US dollars (US$100). Some places don't allow these limits, so they may not apply to you.

14. Indemnity

If you break these terms or the law while using the Services, and that leads to a claim against us, you agree to cover the reasonable costs of that claim.

15. Ending your use

You can stop using the Services at any time. We may suspend or end your access if you break these terms or if we need to protect the Services or other people. Sections that should naturally continue after that, such as ownership, disclaimers and limitation of liability, will continue.

16. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, without regard to its conflict of law rules. Any dispute will be handled in the state or federal courts located in New York, New York, unless the law where you live gives you the right to bring it elsewhere.

17. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as The Critique grows. When we do, we'll change the effective date at the top, and if a change is significant we'll make it visible on the site. If you keep using the Services after a change, you accept the updated terms.

18. Contact
